PROJECT CARRIED BY THE MALEK CHEBEL FOUNDATION

Founded in December 2016, the Malek CHEBEL intends to spread ideas that share the ambition of gathering and fraternity.
Throughout his life, the writer and anthropologist Malek CHEBEL has been committed to promoting an enlightened vision of the world. He left behind a rich intellectual work, which the Foundation wishes to honour, develop and enrich.

The Malek CHEBEL Foundation  is established in Algeria and France. Through its two strong cultural roots, it intends to contribute to the dialogue between East and West and make this intellectual crossbreeding a strength.

The Foundation wishes to become a major pole of intellectual emulation, where knowledge is created and transmitted, in the fields of spirituality, culture and science.

An active, interdisciplinary foundation for the development of knowledge.

The Malek Chebel Foundation was created  to follow in Malek Chebel's footsteps. It pursues the legacy of this eminent intellectual by contributing to the development of knowledge to counter extremist tendencies.

A dual cultural footing

The Malek Chebel Foundation is an international foundation, established in Algeria and France. The city of Skikda, one of the largest ports on the Algerian coast, is home to its national headquarters. Its international headquarters are located in Paris. Meetings and exchanges between the two shores are at the heart of our project: through its two strong cultural roots, the Malek Chebel Foundation intends to contribute to the dialogue between East and West and make this intellectual interbreeding a strength.

A distinguished Scientific committee

The Malek Chebel Foundation enjoys the assistance and support of literary, political and religious personalities, providing valued insight and expertise: Bariza Khiari (former vice-president of the Senate), Jacques Attali (economist), Rachid Benzine (philosopher), Alain Maillard de la Morandais (priest), Fadila Mehal (elected representative), Haïm Korsia (Chief Rabbi of France), Luc Ferry (former minister) and Ghaleb Bencheikh (president of the Foundation of Islam in France).

Three major projects for reflection and action

To meet its ambitious objectives, the Malek Chebel Foundation seeks to pursue three major initiatives that will help to spread the light of reason that Malek Chebel held dear.

A RESEARCH AND TRANSLATION COMMITTEE FOR MALEK CHEBEL'S WORK

The research and translation committee intends to bring Malek Chebel's work to life, from his work on Muslim civilization to the notion of the Islam of Enlightenment. The aim is to make Malek Chebel's thoughts accessible, particularly in the Arabic-speaking academic world. In partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Culture, we are working on translating ten important works of Malek Chebel into Arabic. This effort towards better disseminating his views is also being furthered by publishing his unfinished works.

A TWO-DAY ACADEMIC SYMPOSIUM IN MONTREAL

The Islam of the Enlightenment remains a notion that is not well known to the general public, despite the use increasingly frequent, in particular by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron. During a two-day symposium, specialists, professors and academics will define the notion and social significance of Enlightenment Islam. This event is built in partnership with the UNESCO-PREV chair (prevention of radicalization and violent extremism) and the University of Sherbrooke.
